Since January 15th 2006, Chile is the
only country to have a woman as President. Michelle Bachelet is from the
socialist party named “Concertacion Nacional por la Democracia”. Former Doctor,
she has worked as a Health Secretary and as a Foreign Secretary in Ricardo
Lagos’ government.
Chile is a democracy with secretaries
and a Parliament with senators and deputies. Constitution dates back from 1926
but was suspended during the Military Government from 1973 til 1989 and was
replaced by a new one in 1980 and which really started in 1989 at the same time
as the first free presidential elections held.
Chile is divided in 12 +1 disctincts regions
from North to South. Region number one (Tarapaca) is at the border with Peru
and number twelve (Magellan) is made of the Southern part of Patagonia and
Antartica.
Region number thirteen comprises Santiago and surroundings.
Each region is lead by a Governor
appointed by the President. They are separated in counties, themselves
separated in districts lead by local mayors.
