Chile is a
long straight strip stuck between the Andes Cordillera and the Pacific Ocean. What an idea to get settled out here!
Besides, no one is really sure where it is nor how it looks like.
You will find below the main information
about the country giving you a quick look at Chile’s past and showing you what
it is now.
In 1520, sailor Magellan discovered the
eponymous Strait whilst Santiago was founded in 1541 by Pedro De Valvidia.
Following is a list of Indigenous
Peoples living in Chile when « Conquistadores » arrived, from North
to South : Diaguitas, Changos, Picunches, Mapuches, Pehuenche,
Huilliches, Chonos, Yaganes, Alakalufs, Onas. Some of these ethnic groups have
disappeared. Chilean population is a mix between indigenous and spanish settlers.
The largest native group is the Mapuche
People (including their « cousins » the Huiliches People). Other settlers also arrived (Italians, French,
English) but the main migrations were Croats in the Southernmost part of the
country (Punta Arenas) and Germans who, in
1852, founded the city of Puerto Montt and other cities around Lake Llanquihué
(Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Puerto Octay).
